All-party group to work on abortion text

Electoral register will be used to select the members of the citizens assembly

The assembly will report to the Oireachtas committee whose sole responsibility will be to consider the wording of any referendum and any replacement legislation

The legislation to replace the “right-to-life” clause in the constitution is to be drafted by an all-party committee rather than the government.

The government is to sign off this week on the establishment of a citizens’ assembly on the Eighth Amendment, which was voted in back in 1983 to give equal status to the life of a mother and her unborn child.
