After three years of drought, the winter of 1976 saw over 60cm of precipitation in Portugal, the rainfall making for a bumper harvest of grapes and ensuring 1977 is a vintage year for Port. There’s been a bottle of it in my brother-in-law’s larder since he got his first job, and Christmas 2016 seemed like a good enough reason to open it. Well worth the wait? You bet.
