With only 389 of them on the planet, becoming an MW – a Master of Wine – is statistically more unlikely than getting into space

It is a startling truth that more people have been in space than have the wine world’s most challenging and highly regarded qualification: the MW, or Master of Wine. There are only 389 Masters of Wine worldwide, whereas a substantial 530 humans have made it into orbit. Every year, hundreds take the professional course at the Institute of Masters of Wine, but usually only a handful (eight this year) pass the exam.
