As we sailed along the Danube on board the River Beatrice, the guide on our floating boutique hotel had an answer for every query. Over the eight days of our cruise, I pondered a question to which he might not have the answer. Finally, I settled on this: “Why isn’t the Danube blue?”

I should have thought of it earlier; Johann Strauss II’s Blue Danube waltz was something of a theme...
