Stephen Sondheim’s gloriously ghoulish musical about the “demon barber of Fleet Ftreet” achieved mainstream acclaim when it was filmed by Tim Burton in 2017, with Johnny Depp in the leading role. The Hollywood version did not pay due respect to Sondheim’s operatic score, but directors at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast know better, joining forces with Opera NI for a devilishly detailed performance of the thrilling text.
