In 2008, the English actor Alan Rickman played Steven Spurrier in the film Bottle Shock. Thirty-two years earlier, Spurrier had set up and hosted a wine competition in Paris which changed the wine world in one day. 1976 was the US bicentennial year, and Californian wines were set head to head against first classed growth Bordeaux and Grand Cru Burgundy.
