People holidaying in the Alps over the past two weeks have enjoyed the best skiing of the season so far, with cold temperatures keeping fresh snow in pristine condition.

But heavy snow early in January also brought a number of fatal avalanches – in Les Deux Alpes (France), Zillertal (Austria), Verbier (Switzerland) and Valfréjus (Savoie, France, resulting in 11 deaths in less than a week.
