Brian Friel split his 1967 play Lovers into two distinct parts. In Winners, Mags and Joe are two 17-year-olds who have just finished school and are studying for their final-year exams. Mags is pregnant and in three weeks the couple will marry. In Losers, middle-aged Andy reflects on the transformation in his relationship with Hanna from a giddy courtship to a stale marriage dominated by Hanna’s elderly, controlling mother.
