First, the bad news: this is no Gone Girl. Despite the advance hype breathlessly comparing Zimbabwe-born, London-based writer Paula Hawkins’s debut to Gillian Flynn’s bestselling, David Fincher-adapted novel, The Girl On The Train is a much less ambitious read: twisty in its plot machinations, certainly, but without the verve and intricacy of characterisation that gave Gone Girl such an edge over its peers.
