Off Message: It’s refreshing to see fashion magazines using models of a certain age, but let’s not kid ourselves that they’re doing it for the right reasons

I’m feeling a little underwhelmed by the current ‘trend’ in fashion magazines to use models at the (ahem) upper end of the age bracket to help flog expensive clothes and accessories.

It’s nice to see, of course, that Joan Didion, the elegant 80-year-old novelist and star of a much publicised magazine campaign for the French fashion brand Celine, is not too fussed about how old she looks.

In the ad, in which Didion is wearing a pair of oversized sunglasses and looking very cool in black, she also looks very much her age, which suggests she is not too precious about it.
