Michael Lowry’s surreal interview with Áine Lawlor on the News At One (RTÉ Radio 1) last week would have wrecked the reputation and future prospects of almost any other Irish politician. But because he is so far out beyond that point by now, it hardly matters.

In a curious way, Lowry’s destruction of his own career has ultimately ring-fenced it. He is, after all, the TD with the most comfortable re-election prospects...
