On the Monday in August 1979 when the IRA killed Lord Mountbatten in Mullaghmore in Co Sligo, I was a five-year-old child growing up in a border county on the other side of the country.

I have vague memories of seeing photographs of his wrecked boat on the front of the newspapers. But it wasn’t until two years later, with the death of Bobby Sands, that the conflict that was raging 25 miles up the road...
