Three years ago, Maserati chief executive Harald Wester told us at the launch of the new Quattroporte luxury saloon that he anticipated sales of 50,000 vehicles a year by the end of 2015. It sounded ambitious then, and it has proved so.

Back then the Italian firm was selling around 6,000 cars annually, which was limited by the small model range, It consisted of the Quattroporte itself (a rival to cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7...
