Jennifer Egan’s enthusiasm is infectious. The Pulitzer Prize winner’s new novel, Manhattan Beach, is set in the Brooklyn Naval Yard during World War II, and tells the story of Anna Kerrigan, a determined young woman whose Mob-connected father vanished several years before. Bored with her job measuring machine parts, Anna becomes a diver, repairing the ships that will help win the war.
