I remember my dad growing a ponytail sometime in his early 40s. There was no question that this was a kind of overcompensation for the fact that there was little hair left anywhere else on his head, as well as a more obvious attempt at still feeling like he was cool, relevant, trendy. At that point, my sisters and I were in our teens, so any effort at being cool was totally lost on us....
