For more than a thousand years, Champagne was a region to the west of Paris that included what eventually became the departments of Marne and Aube. Its regional capital was Troyes, in the Aube.

Both parts of this former Champagne were on the same chalky soil and both on north-flowing rivers: Reims on the Marne, Troyes on the Seine.
