Biopics are tricky. The perceived need to offer cinema audiences a comprehensive run-through of the subject’s Wikipedia entry tends to crowd out the actual drama that makes someone’s life worth making a film about in the first place. That goes double for the rock ’n’ roll biopic, which must straddle the line between the debauched reality that everyone presumably buys their tickets to see, and mass-market respectability.
