I am heading home after almost three weeks in Australia, and my on-screen flight map is giving me a last reminder – as if I needed it – of the sheer scale of this destination. Almost five hours into my flight from Melbourne, I still haven’t actually left Australian airspace, and the vast, uninhabited parts of the continent are continuing to stretch out below me.
