Darkness on the edge of west Cork
More than two decades have passed since Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found murdered in Schull, Co Cork. Now the killing is the subject of an acclaimed new 13-hour podcast, entitled simply West Cork.
December 26, 1996. RTÉ newsreader Michael Murphy delivers the evening’s main headline: a Frenchwoman has been found battered to death, half-dressed, in a idyllic corner of west Cork. This was the first murder in the area in living memory, a huge shock to the national senses, and one that etched the name Sophie Toscan du Plantier forever on the Irish psyche. Today, more than 21 years on, the identity of her murderer remains unresolved.
