Ian Nepomniachtchi won the first event of the 2019 FIDE Grand Prix, a series of four tournaments in Moscow, Jurmala/Riga, Hamburg and Tel Aviv. The top two finishers will qualify for the Candidates Tournament where they will compete for the right to challenge Magnus Carlsen in a World Championship match.
