It might be hard to find parallels between the modern Sinn Féin and Ukip, except for each party’s nationalist core. The ‘unashamedly patriotic’ British party is all for going it alone, for small government, and strict immigration controls.

If anything, the original intensely Irish-Ireland Sinn Féin of the early 20th century might have harboured ideas more like those of the modern Ukip than the socially liberal, state-involved, left-wing prospect...
