Varadkar backtracks on hospital death rates promise

The Department of Health is rowing back on a commitment to publish hospital death rates at individually named hospitals by the end of this year.

In February, chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan promised to publish mortality rates for certain presenting conditions at individual hospitals by the end of 2014. Former health minister James Reilly also promised that detailed mortality rates would be published.
