Upping the Ante: Leitrim’s laggards can take heart from irrepressible Iceland

The doughty Scandinavians have proved that even the smallest teams can thrive in big tournaments: minnows like Leitrim must follow their example

I type these words amid the clouds, availing of what must be one of the wonders of our world: the internet mid-flight over the great Atlantic.

The purpose of my visit to New York? To watch their footballers (hopefully) beat Leitrim in the opening game of the Connacht senior football championship today – creating history and improving my bank balance in so doing. Over to you, Jamie Clarke.
