Her language less than parliamentary on more than one occasion, Ruth Coppinger turned to Michael Healy-Rae during Wednesday’s hearing and said: “You’re a joke.”

Her succinct appraisal may have applied to the Football Association of Ireland’s performance generally, as the Oireachtas committee on transport, tourism and sport opened the eyes of the Irish public to the shambles that is the governing body of our most popular sport.
