Alan Mulally, the former chief executive of the Ford Motor Company and current director of Google, has said he believes the era of clean energy driverless cars is not far off.

Mulally, who traces his family roots to Cork, is credited with turning Ford radically around so it went from loss-making to profitable and was the only major American car manufacturer not to require a bailout during the financial crisis.
