Scientists win €130,000 European Defence deal

An innovative Galway start-up has found the sweet spot with a new approach to decontamination and disease prevention that uses complex sugars to neutralise pathogens.

Aquila Biosciences was established in August 2012 by NUI Galway professors Lokesh Joshi and Afshin Samali to apply glycobiology research commercially.

“Ours is an innovative approach to decontamination,” explained Joshi. “Complex sugars coat each and every cell in a living organism and mediate interactions between cells.
