Self-employment arrangements affect the legal rights of employees

In late January, the government announced a public consultation into employers’ use of mechanisms to avoid employment and tax liabilities.

It is quite clear that Tánaiste Joan Burton and Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, when commencing this initiative, had abuse firmly in mind.

Burton said at its launch that the “increasing evidence of self-employment arrangements, which undermine workers’ benefit entitlements and increase the burden on compliant taxpayers” was a concern....
