Rip-off Republic

Thanks to online shopping, most English retailers have stopped charging Irish shoppers over the odds for fashion – but our survey shows some are still hitting us with mark-ups as big as 20%

The results of our survey of retailers were stark indeed: price differentials of between 20 and 30 per cent abounded. Commonly, Irish price tags bore a 15 or 18 per cent differential.

Responding to the Rip-off Republic report, the retailers surveyed attributed the sometimes staggering differences to myriad elements of trading here, including long leases, high rent and upward-only revision clauses. Almost two years later, the picture is mostly the same, with some exceptions.
