Pace of change for employees and employers is "immense"

It’s hard to see the challenges that lie ahead in the workplace, says Facebook HR boss

What are your day-to-day responsibilities?

I spend time with our teams and leaders across our businesses in the EMEA region helping them to achieve their business objectives by developing people and organisational capability. My kids ask me the same question - and it's as hard to answer them as it is to answer this question!

What is your professional background?

I’ve been in HR for my entire career and in the technology industry. I spent nine years at Microsoft before joining Facebook and was mostly recently based in Asia. Prior to that, I was seven years at Accenture in London and in Dublin. I’ve been in a range of roles across the HR function from Recruiting, C&B, HR systems and HRBP functions.

Tell me about yourself away from work?

I’m the mother of two daughters (12 and 9) so life is busy being their taxi driver, social planner and admin assistant. I run to unwind. Having spent time abroad, we love to travel and try to make the most of our holidays to interesting places.

Tell us something very few people know about you?

I have a secret passion for flower arranging…(oops!).

You are speaking at the forthcoming future of work summit. What is your talk about?

My talk is about our experience at Facebook in trying to think differently about organisational culture and employee engagement.

What are the main challenges for employers and employees during this era of change?

The pace of change is immense for employees and employers. It’s also hard to see what we should plan for, what skills and what challenges will enable a business be successful in the future. In large measure, the only thing we can build for is learning agility and adaptability.

What will a good job look like in the future?

I’m not sure we’ll still have the concept of ‘job’ as it is today and instead, we’ll think of work and life in a more integrated way. It should feel more like a hobby you are passionate about than work. Equally, work and skills can be sourced more easily with less boundaries like geography, pay scales and legal structures surrounding them.
