A racially mixed Irish team claimed several medals at the World Under-20 Championships in Tampere last week, eliciting an avalanche of richly deserved praise – but also a waft of bigotry from the usual suspects

Nobody wants to open up. Nobody is willing to look back. Nobody fancies a meander into the past.

Where there’s not silence, there’s discomfort. And where there’s not discomfort, there’s a refusal. The father of Patience Jumbo-Gula says he’d rather not go there. The mother of Rhasidat Adeleke doesn’t respond. The agent of Gina Akpe-Moses says he’s not comfortable having her converse about it, and that “it wouldn’t be something we could explore further”....
