The financial markets were characterised by a strange calmness in 2017, but that didn’t mean little of interest was happening, writes Declan King

One of the standout features of financial markets this year has been the relative calmness. The S&P 500 has been positive in every single month so far in 2017 and has experienced a daily loss greater than 1 per cent on only four occasions, the largest of these being a loss of 1.8 per cent.
