Even by our standards today, 1957 was a weird year. The Soviets launched Sputniks 1 and 2, scaring the crap out of the Western world by shooting a dog called Laika into space.

The Hula Hoop was the world’s most popular toy, and Elvis built Graceland. Singapore became a self-ruling state, as did Ghana. Papa Doc became president of Haiti. Ireland joined the IMF and the World Bank along with Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Ghana in 1957.
