When the American satirist PJ O’Rourke visited the North nearly 30 years ago, he joked that the British army should have gone for seven-irons and brightly coloured sweaters instead of its usual camouflage.

He dubbed the North “The piece of Ireland that passeth all understanding”. While that image is slowly changing, the North remains the same small, verdant paradise (or giant golf course) that O’Rourke remembers from the bad old days....
