He’s spent plenty, too — think of the Cuban cigars, the private jets, the sports cars. Many, many sports cars.

And yet, when at the age of 42 in 2011 Clarke won the Open, and the accompanying millions in prize money and endorsement bonuses, it was surprising to hear his manager say that “the timing could not have been better”.
