The journalists watching them avoided Ireland match nights thereafter. The morning after that psychological scarring, I took a stroll, only to see billboards proclaiming that “This is rugby country”, and had to double-check that I was still on Thomas Street in the heart of the Liberties.

This is, of course, merely anecdotal, but it’s the whiff that many get when it comes to Irish rugby.
