When Shane Ryan plunges into the pool at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio this afternoon, he will be completing one of the more remarkable journeys to these Games.

As he takes his place at the blocks for the heats of the 100m backstroke, he could be forgiven for thinking of how easily his green swim cap might have been replaced by one bearing the Stars and Stripes.
