Founding an investigations unit within your successful media start-up sounds a bit like the old joke about how to become a millionaire: “Start out as a billionaire, then invest in an airline/football club.”

But that’s what Buzzfeed has done. Rather than planes or players, it has invested over the past two years in enticing high-flying reporters from the likes of the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Sunday Times....
