The announcement that Noel Curran is to step down as director general of RTE in May 2016 will come as a surprise to many.

Curran only took over as the head of the state broadcaster four years ago but has managed to lead RTE through some of its most turbulent times.

In 2011, the year Curran took up his role as director general, RTÉ reported a €16.8 million deficit, its third annual deficit in a row.
