1. NY Times subscriptions

The New York Times saw online subscriptions double in 2016 in spite of (or perhaps because of) frequent scathing attacks from US President Donald Trump. It now has over 3 million subscribers between print and digital. In quarter 4 of 2016, it added 276,000 new digital news subscriptions. It was its best quarter since 2011, the year the pay model was launched. Real news matters to people, and these numbers reflect that.
