Carpentry tradition gets new lease of life

Ciaran McPhilips makes simple pared-back furniture using hardwoods like oak, ash and walnut

Ciaran McPhilips breathed new life into his woodworking heritage when he reopened his family’s sawmill in Clones, Co Monaghan, last year to start his new venture, Cooper Handcrafted Furniture.

“I grew up in the sawmill. My grandfather was a cooper, so my family was always known as ‘the Cooper McPhilips’.

“It had closed in the 1990s, but I started up the machines again,” he said.
