The increase in the carbon tax announced in the budget was branded “a cash grab” by a motoring group and “just one piece of the jigsaw” by environmentalists.

AA Ireland claimed that the increase would do little to reduce Ireland’s reliance on the private car and called it a “cash-grab dressed up as a green initiative”.
