He was the multimillionaire white knight investor who had promised to do whatever it took to make Irish TV a success. Yet late last month John Griffin, who had made his fortune by selling the London cab company Addison Lee, withdrew his support with immediate effect.

A frantic scramble to find another investor ensued, but to no avail, and last Thursday the companies behind Irish TV went to the courts and sought an interim examinership....
