Hundreds of local post offices have closed in the past decade

In the weeks before Christmas, hundreds of people signed a petition urging An Post to keep the post office in Ballygawley, Co Sligo open.

It was a familiar story, another threat to another rural community – communities already reeling from the closure of Garda stations and pubs.

An Post has closed down close to 300 outlets over the past decade, mainly in rural areas. But a network of about 1,100 post offices still remains...
