Last Monday was Burns Night in Scotland, the commemoration of the great poet Robert Burns. This is worth celebrating. There are few enough national days anywhere in the world determined by the birthday of a tax official. That was Burns’ day job, for a short time at least, when he wasn’t writing poetry.

Possibly his most famous poetic line is his wish for the gift to see ourselves as others see us.
