Barnes: ‘If I don’t medal in Rio, I’ll be in a dole line’

Olympic medallist says he has seen very few financial gains from his achievements

Leading Irish sports figures have hit out at the lack of state support for elite-level sport.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring last week announced an increase in the 2016 sports budget to €27 million, with €10.25 million going to high-performance sport.

But elite boxer and double Olympic medallist Paddy Barnes said he had seen very few financial gains from his achievements.
