Whenever RTÉ publishes its top ten earners, I know my phone will ring. There are plenty of commentators eager to hold the national broadcaster’s largesse up to ridicule, but it’s trickier to get someone who will argue their legitimacy.

I’m that guy, apparently, and my point is simple. All top talent, whether in sports, medicine, the law or even the public service, expect to be rewarded. The rest is negotiation....
