Worth reading...if you can stomach the prose

NON-fiction: Why information Grows. By Cesar Hidalgo. Allen Lane, €26.60. Reviewed by David Clerkin

This is an unconventional book. It begins with the author recounting his wife giving birth, as he complains (twice) that his chair was uncomfortable while her epidural allowed her to rest peacefully in her bed before a “short” 26-minute delivery.

By the end, readers are being treated to lines as dizzying as “solids minimise the need for energy to produce order and shield information from the steady march of entropy”.
