The proliferation of slogans on everything from notebooks to hoodies is a trend that shows no signs of abating. And now, kidswear and kids’ accessories are fast becoming overwhelmed with mantras. But does this positive messaging make any difference, asks Jessie Collins, or is it all just white noise?

There’s a blank space on my kitchen wall that I hastily covered in chalkboard paper a while back. It was a half-hearted attempt to mimic those Pinterest kitchens full of excellent shelving, hooks that never seem to hold anything except a pristine apron, populated by designer fridge freezers and beautifully curated chalkboards saying things like ‘Be a rainbow for somebody’s cloud’, ‘Hope in things unseen’, and ‘Imagine, Believe, Achieve’.
