Wine and revolution in the Rhône
The French Revolution had plenty of knock-on effects for the wine industry, and some of them are still being felt in the Rhône Valley
This is Bastille weekend, France’s annual national day celebration, which expanded from a simple picnic and a parade a year after the storming of the Bastille in 1789 to a week-long set of fireworks, street parties, Tour de France antics, wine, cheese and croissant promotions, and a huge military parade along the Champs-Élysées. And, of course, millions of raised glasses, tear-inducing renditions of La Marseillaise and the mighty invocation: vive la France!
