Ray Bassett played a key role in the Irish government’s talks team during the Good Friday Agreement negotiations. Here, he recounts the view from inside the negotiation room

It scarcely seems like 20 years ago. There are so many vivid memories of that time, that it is hard to put a representative selection of them down coherently on paper. The morning of April 9, 1998 was cold in Belfast, with scattered snow flurries. All the participants in the talks had been through a marathon session of more than 48 hours without sleep. That time had passed so quickly, as meeting after meeting followed each other.
